What animals are on the construction signs around Children’s Mercy? Hospital artist Scribe explains

[BLANK_AUDIO] It’s just a big goofy bear. Kinda like a maintenance guys, but
we’re using it for directional signs. We’re building this awesome
research tower up there, which closed a lot of streets around here. I picture him as like a walking 3D
employee of the hospital that’s helping people. And sometimes when the parents
are driving around and there’s a kid in the car, and
they’re trying to figure something out. This may be something where the kid ends
up going like hey, what’s that over there? Look at that bear, and
that’ll clue their parent in. The whole hospital is just full of
tons of different animals and stuff, that we have this kind of
whole Mercy world of things. And so the bears and stuff like that
are just kind of part of a larger cast of characters that make the kids feel safe
and secure about being here at Children’s. The ambulances are a public version,
almost sort of mobile billboard. I like it when it’s like larger than life, like that it feels the cartoons
are invading the real world, almost kind of like
Who Framed Roger Rabbit kind of thing. I always try to make it silly and kind
of push the boundaries a little bit of like what silliness is, because that’s
what seems to be bring kids a lot of joy. I still watch cartoons with my boys and
stuff, and my boys are now 12 and 15 years old,
and we still watch cartoons. So I’m still looking at what
young kids are watching, and looking at what their
sense of humor and stuff is. Just because I enjoy it but maybe I’m
struggling with growing up myself. So [LAUGH], but I think that laughter and
smiles and stuff behind artwork like that are one of the coolest
gifts that you can give people. [BLANK_AUDIO]
