Two Legionnaires’ Cases At Warren Barr Rehabilitation Center

HE OUT IN THE FIRST PLACE? GOOD EVENING. I’M IRIKA SARGENT. I’M ROB JOHNSON. WE LEARNED THAT IF THERE IS ANOTHER SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEM LIKE LEGIONNAIRE’S, PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE NURSING HOME MAY NEVER KNOW. THIS COMES AFTERWARD OF TWO CASES OF THE DISEASE IN A SOUTHWEST NURSING HOME. WE ARE LIVE THERE. SUZANNE. REPORTER: THIS FACILITY HAS AN OVERALL RATING OF ONE STAR FROM MEDICARE.GOV. WE LEARNED THAT FACILITIES LIKE THIS ONE DO HAVE TO REPORT CASES OF LEGIONNAIRE’S DISEASE TO PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENTS BUT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO TELL ANYONE ELSE. AND CHECKING WITH THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH, WE ARE TOLD, THERE ARE RULES TO NOTIFY RESIDENTS, STAFF OR FAMILY ABOUT CASES OF LEGIONNAIRE’S DISEASE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF STATE RUN VETERANS HOMES. THAT IS ABSURD. THE STATE HAS A RESPONSIBILITY FOR PEOPLE. THEY PASSED OUT FLYERS TO THE CASES TO THOSE WITH LOVED ONES AT THE FACILITY LIKE MICHELLE WILSON. WILSON SAYS SHE PICKED UP HER SISTER-IN-LAW JUST TO GIVE HER A SHOWER BECAUSE THERE IS NO RUNNING WATER AT THE FACILITY. THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO TELL PEOPLE WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THEM. NO MATTER WHAT. THE DIRECTOR TOLD US THERE IS A SELF-IMPOSED WATER RESTRICTION IN PLACE AND THAT BOTTLED WATER WAS BROUGHT INTO BE USED FOR EVERYTHING HERE AFTER THE ILLINOIS AND CHICAGO DEPARTMENTS OF PUBLIC HEALTH RAISED CONCERNS ABOUT THE WATER QUALITY BUT ISSUED NO VIOLATIONS TO THE FACILITY. IN THE MEANTIME, THE FACILITY DIRECTOR IS TELLING US THAT THE CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF WATER
