Timeline from Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills

REPORTING IN MIAMI, JOAN MURRAY, CBS4 NEWS. NOW, TO NEW DETAILS UNCOVERED BY CBS4 INVESTIGATOR JIM DeFEDE WHO JOINS US IN THE STUDIO. YOU’VE BEEN ON THIS SINCE THE STORY BROKE, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED TODAY. Reporter: WHAT WE’RE LEARNING FOR THE FIRST TIME IS THE NURSING HOME ITSELF IS PUTTING OUT A BIT OF A TIMELINE. TRYING TO EXPLAIN WHAT EXACTLY TOOK PLACE AND IT’S FOCUSED MAINLY ON THE ROLE THAT FPL PLAYED. BUT BEFORE WE GET TO THAT, WE HAVE BREAKING NEWS OF OUR OWN. WHAT WE’VE LEARNED IN THE LAST FEW HOURS, IS THAT AT LEAST THREE TIMES IN THE 36 HOURS PRIOR TO THE FIRST DEATH, NURSING HOME OFFICIALS CALLED GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT, A CELL PHONE THAT HE HAD GIVEN OUT TO OFFICIALS TO SAY IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS CALL MY CELL PHONE I’LL INTERSEED AND MAKE SURE THEY GET DONE. THREE DIDN’T CALLS WENT TO THAT CELL PHONE. THEY WERE RESPONDED TO BUT NOTHING ENDED UP HAPPENING AND THE POWER NEVER CAME BACK ON. LET’S GO TO FPL FOR A SECOND. THIS FACILITY HAD TWO FPL TRANSFORMERS, ONE THAT POWERED THE LIFE SAFETY SYSTEMS, THE OTHER 1 THAT DID THE AIR CONDITIONING UNIT. NOW, LET’S GO TO SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10. THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE STORM HIT. NOW, THE POWER GOES OUT AT AROUND 3:00 P.M. A GENERATOR IS ABLE TO KEEP THE LIFE SAFETY SYSTEMS ON. BUT POWER TO THE AIR CONDITIONING CURRENT IS OUT. THE FIRST CALL TO FPL GOES AT 3:49 AND THERE ISSUED AN EMERGENCY TICKET. WE’VE SEEN COPIES OF THE TICKET NUMBER THAT THAT WAS TO VERIFY THAT. ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, FPL SAID THAT THEY WOULD, IN FACT, RESPOND TO THE TICKET THAT HAD BEEN RECREATED AND GO OUT EARLY ACCORDING TO THE NURSING HOME NO ONE CAME TO THE FACILITY. THEY WERE PROMISE TODAY BE THERE IN THE MORNING. THEY CALLED, NOBODY SHOWED UP IN THE MORNING. THEY CALLED, AGAIN, IN THE AFTERNOON. NOBODY CAME IN THE AFTERNOON. SAME THING IN THE EVENING. IT WAS AT THIS TIME ON MONDAY IN AFTERNOON IN THE EARLY EVENING THAT THE FIRST CALL TO GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT SCOTT’S CELL PHONE WENT FROM THE FACILITY. AGAIN, SOMEBODY FROM THE EMERGENCY OPERATIONS OFFICER RETURNED THE CALL. THAT HAD BEEN GIVE TINE GIVE GIVE. TO RETURN THE CALL AND SAID THEY WOULD WORK ON GETTING FPL OUT THERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. BUT THAT DID NOT OCCUR ON MONDAY. SO NOW WE GO FORWARD TO TUESDAY. SO NOW ON TUESDAY, AGAIN, FPL ADMINISTRATORS ARE SAYING THEY WOULD FIX THE TRANSFORMER BY TUESDAY MORNING ACCORDING TO THE NURSING HOME. AGAIN, FPL NEVER SHOWED UP. THEY SAID THEY WOULD COME IN THE AFTERNOON NEVER SHOWED UP. MORE CALLS TO THE GOVERNOR GO OUT. THE ADMINISTRATORS THERE AT THE NURSING HOME APPARENTLY CALLED THE GOVERNOR TWO MORE TIMES ON TUESDAY. TO SAY WOOARY NOT GETTING A REQUEST FOR HELP FROM FPL ANSWERED. AND THEY ARE IN NEED ASSISTANCE IMMEDIATELY. NOW, WHAT WE SAW AS A RESULT IS GO TO WEDNESDAY. WEDNESDAY, IS WHEN THE PATIENTS BEGAN TO DIE. IN THE EARLY MORNINGS WE STARTED SEEING STARTED AT 1:00, EMERGENCY CREWS WERE CALLED 911 PARAMEDICS WERE SUMMONED FIRST. FOR MILD SITUATIONS. AND THEY GREW MORE PROGRESSIVE. ONE OF THE THINGS I FOUND FASCINATING. WAS THAT AT 4:30 IN THE MORNING, THEY WENT TO TRY TO REVIVE A PATIENT WHO HAD A DNR, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO, SO THEY LET HIM GO. THEN WHILE THEY WERE STILL THERE, ANOTHER PATIENT HAD A HEART ATTACK. AND DIED. THAT’S WHEN THINGS BEGAN TO MOVE. NOW, I WILL TELL YOU, THAT FPL HAS COME OUT TO US AND GIVEN US A STATEMENT IN WHICH THEY TALK ABOUT HOW THEY WERE BASICALLY TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING THEY COULD TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION THERE. MORE IMPORTANTLY, WE NOW HAVE A STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR. SINCE WE WENT ON AIR WITH THIS STORY ABOUT TWO HOURS AGO, THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE HAS NOW SAID, THIS IS A STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR, EVERY CALL MADE TO THE GOVERNOR FROM FACILITY MANAGEMENT WAS REFERRED TO THE AGENCY FOR HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION, AND THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, AND QUICKLY RETURNED. THAT MAY BE TRUE. QUESTION IS NOT WHETHER OR NOT THEY WERE RETURNED. THE QUESTION IS DID THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE AND ET DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH DO EVERYTHING THEY COULD TO GET FPL OUT TO THE SITE? NOW, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THINGS, LET’S BE CLEAR DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SAYS IF THAT FACILITY EVER THOUGHT ANY PATIENTS WERE IN DISTRESS, THEY NEED TODAY DIAL 911 AND GET HELP. SO YOU HAVE A SITUATION WHERE WHO’S AT FAULT. YOU’RE GOING TO SEE A LOT OF FINGER POINTING. SHOULD THE GOVERNOR HAVE BEEN MORE INVOLVED. SHOULD FPL WHY DIFFERENT THAT A OF THEY GET BETTER SERVICE AND THE SAME WITH THE NURSING HOME ITSELF. EVERY DAY WE’RE DISCOVERING MORE AND MORE FROM THIS HORRIFIC STORY THAT SHOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED. I THINK IT’S CLEAR THAT EVERYBODY SHARES SOME SORT OF BLAME. AND THE NURSING SUPERVISOR AT MEMORIAL REGIONAL HOSPITAL SHE’S A HERO BECAUSE SHE’S THE ONE WHO WENT ACROSS THE STREET

  1. "What we have here, is a failure to communicate." Seen the same thing on airplane crash investigation when co-pilot for 3 times over 1/2 hr? kept saying we're in trouble. Finally, (too late) he states what he should have–WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF FUEL! Can't help thinking all this 'political correctness' BS has played a role in all of this. People are AFRAID of stating the truth.
