St. Mark’s Hospital honored by American Hospital Association

FOR THOSE TRICK-OR-TREATERS ON HALLOWEEN THURSDAY. BACK OVER TO YOU, EMILY. Emily: OKAY. DAN, THANKS. ST. MARK’S HOSPITAL HAS RECENTLY BEEN HONORED BY THE AMERICAN HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION FOR 100 YEARS IN PARTICIPATION IN LEADERSHIP. TODAY, WE WELCOME MARK, ST. MARK’S CEO TO TELL US ABOUT THE HONOR AND WHAT IT MEANS. THANKS FOR JOINING US. Guest: THANKS. Emily: LET’S TALK ABOUT THE HONOR. WE AREN’T ALL PART OF THE HOSPITAL WORLD. BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE A BIG DEAL. Guest: THE AMERICAN HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION IS A NATIONAL ORGANIZATION MADE UP OF OVER 5,000 HEALTHCARE ENTITIES. WHAT THEY DO IS SERVE AS OUR NATIONAL ADVOCATE AND GIVE US A VOICE LOCALLY AS WE CONTINUE TO CHANGE HEALTHCARE THAT IS MAKING IT BETTER FOR PATIENTS ON A DAILY BASIS. SO THE HONOR IS BASICALLY RECOGNIZING US AS ONE OF THE CHARTER MEMBERS OF THE HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION. THAT THEY STARTED ACCEPTING MEMBERS IN 1919. AND SO HERE WE ARE 100 YEARS LATER, HAVING BEEN CARRYING A VOICE IN SALT LAKE CITY AREA AND UTAH FOR OVER 100 YEARS. Emily: LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT. I DIDN’T REALIZE THAT. I KNOW ST. MARK’S. I’VE BEEN THERE. BUT THIS WAS THE FIRST UTAH HOSPITAL. Guest: ABSOLUTELY. Emily: TALK ABOUT THAT. Guest: 1872, ST. MARK’S OPENED NOT IN THE LOCATION NOW BUT AS UTAH’S FIRST HOSPITAL. SO WE CARRIED THE CARE OF THIS STATE AND ALL THOSE FOLKS WHO HAD TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL, WAY BACK THEN. AND HERE WE ARE, ALMOST 150 YEARS LATER, CERTAINLY HAVE ADVANCED. AND WE MOVED INTO OUR PHYSICAL PLANT WE’RE AT NOW IN 1972. 100 YEARS AFTER WE OPENED WE MOVED INTO THE NEW BUILDING. HERE WE ARE ADVANCING HEALTHCARE AND CONTINUING TO BE A LEADER IN THE COMMUNITY. WE’LL BE HERE FOREVER. Emily: I LOVE THAT, A LEADER IN THE COMMUNITY. IT ALSO TALKED ABOUT IN HERE, HOW THE TRAINING OF OUR NURSES AND DOCTORS, HAPPENED THERE! TALK ABOUT THAT, TOO. Guest: I OFFICIALLY BELIEVE WE’VE GOT TO KNOW OUR HISTORY, SO WE CAN ADVANCE FORWARD IN THE FUTURE. IN 1894, AGAIN, 1894, WE OPENED ST. MARK’S NURSING SCHOOL. WE CONTINUE TO HAVE STUDENTS TODAY FROM ALL THE NURSING SCHOOLS ACROSS THE VALLEY COMING TO OUR HOSPITAL TO TRAIN WITH OUR FANTASTIC PROVIDERS, NURSES, PHYSICIANS. AND HOPEFULLY, WE HIRE THEM ON AND HOPEFULLY THEY STAY IN THE VALLEY, BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT OF HEALTHCARE THEY CAN GO TO AND WORK. Emily: THIS MIGHT SEEM LIKE AN EASY QUESTION: WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT THE NURSES OF THE FUTURE ARE TRAINED BY SUCH EXCELLENT PROVIDERS RIGHT NOW? IT SEEMS LIKE A SILLY QUESTION BUT IT’S IMPORTANT. Guest: I TELL ‘YA, THE OLDER I GET, THE MORE PERSONAL IT GETS. WHAT I WANT, IS I WANT NURSES THAT CHOOSE THAT CAREER TO BE ABLE TO COME TO AN ORGANIZATION LIKE ST. MARK’S THAT HAS LOW TURNOVER AND GREAT ENVIRONMENT AND EXPERIENCE, SO THAT THEY CAN FOCUS 100% OF THEIR TIME ON PATIENTS AT THE BEDSIDE. THAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. AS TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES, SOMETIMES THAT PULLS OUR CLINICIANS AWAY FROM THE BEDSIDE. WHAT WE’RE TRYING TO DO IS PUT PEOPLE CLOSER. AND THEY GET A REALLY GOOD EXPERIENCE, BECAUSE THEY’RE CARING FOR YOU AND I IN THE FUTURE. Emily: NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. LET’S TALK ABOUT THE INSTITUTE FOR ROBOTIC SURGERY. THIS IS EXCITING. Guest: THE UTAH INSTITUTE OF ROBOTIC SURGERY, WHAT WE REALIZED AT ST. MARK’S, WE HAVE INVESTED MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON TECHNOLOGY. AND TECHNOLOGY IN ROBOTICS. WHEN I HAVE SURGERY, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THOSE SURGEONS ARE GOING THROUGH THE SMALLEST HOLES POSSIBLE IN MY BODY, SO I CAN RECOVER FASTER WITH LESS BLOOD LOSS, AND I GET BACK TO WORK QUICKER. WE HAVE OVER 25 PROVIDERS DOING OVER 50 TYPES OF SURGERIES USING OUR THREE ROBOTIC UNITS THAT WE HAVE IN THE O.R. SO WHAT WE DID IS PACKAGED THAT AND PUT CLINICIANS A ACROSS THE TABLE FROM EACH OTHER, SO THEY CAN TALK ABOUT BEST PRACTICES. AND WE CREATED THE UTAH INSTITUTE FOR ROBOTIC SURGERY. THE ONLY INSTITUTE IN UTAH. WE ALSO DO THE MOST ROBOTIC SURGERIES IN THE STATE OF UTAH AT ST. MARK’S HOSPITAL. WE’RE CARING AND GETTING PEOPLE BACK ON THEIR FEET FASTER. Emily: GET THEM OUT OF THERE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. Guest: GET THEM OUT OF THE 4079! Emily: WE APPRECIATE IT.
