Six orphaned bear cubs at rehab center


Y. REPORTER: SCIENTISTS SAY DON’T BE FOOLED, BY THE CUTE IMAGES CAPTURED ON THIS CAMERA.>>THESE ARE WILD ANIMALS. REPORTER: WHICH IS WHY DR. KATHLEEN RAMSAY SAYS THIS KIND OF INTERACTION, IS ACTUALLY GOOD FOR THEM.>>ANY EXPERIENCE WITH HUMANS HAS TO BE A MORTIFYING EXPERIENCE. THEY CAN HAVE NO LOVE FOR HUMANS. REPORTER: DR. RAMSAY RUNS THE ONLY WILDLIFE REHAB CENTER IN THE STATE THAT ACCEPTS ORPHAN BEAR CUBS, LIKE THIS. IN JUST THE LAST WEEK THE NUMBER OF CUBS TRIPLED.>>SIX IS PUSHING OUR LIMIT. REPORTER: THESE TWO WERE THE FIRST, AFTER GAME AND FISH SAYS THE MOMMA BEAR ATTACKED MARATHON RUNNER KAREN WILLIAMS IN THE VALLES CALDERA.>>THEY WERE VERY, VERY STARVED, VERY WEAK. REPORTER: TODAY, DR. RAMSAY’S TEAM TRANSFERRED THE CUBS TO A NEW ENCLOSURE WHERE THEY WILL LEARN WHAT WILD FOODS TO EAT, AND HOW TO SCAVENGE. BUT THIS IS THE EXTENT OF HER INTERACTION WITH THEM.>>IF I’M GOING TO GET THEM BACK INTO THE WILD AND DO A GOOD JOB, THEY HAVE TO BE AFRAID OF HUMANS, THEY HAVE TO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HUMAN BEINGS. REPORTER: WHEN WINTER HITS, NEW MEXICO GAME AND FISH BIOLOGIST RICK WINSLOW WILL COME FOR THE CUBS AND RELEASE THEM BACK INTO THE WILD.>>SO THEY CAN GO FIND THEIR OWN DEN, AND DEN UP BY THEMSELVES AND HOPEFULLY BECOME BEARS AGAIN. REPORTER: IT’S A PROCESS BOTH THE STATE AND THE REHAB CENTER SAY WORKS. SINCE IT’S RARE THEY EVER SEE THESE LITTLE GUYS AGAIN.
