Salem Health Medical Group provider Kathryn “Kitty” Nielsen, CNM

Hi, I’m Kathryn Nielsen and I’m a
certified nurse midwife. My given name is Kathryn. But I’m only called that if
I’m in trouble, so please call me Kitty. I started my educational journey at
Pacific University in Forest Grove. I got a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Then
went on to get a master’s degree in bio organic chemistry from the Oregon
Graduate Institute which is now part of OHSU… went to nursing school, got a
bachelor’s degree in nursing at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri…
went on to get a master’s in nursing as a nurse practitioner at the University of
Missouri – Kansas City and did nurse midwifery post master’s at the University
of Missouri in Columbia. Coming back to Oregon, then I finished up with a
post master’s certificate in public health from OHSU. I have always enjoyed working
in women’s health care. I enjoy working with younger women who are growing their
families and starting out. I enjoy working with more mature women who are
finishing their reproductive years and moving on to menopause and midwifery lets me use all of those talents and gifts together in a way that really
satisfies me. When I see patients in the clinic I think it’s really important
that I be as open as I can to what they need and what they want and just make
the clinic a place where women can be open and unafraid to share their needs.
Away from the clinic I really enjoy traveling. My parents are Danish and I
have lots of relatives in Denmark. So I spent some time there. We like to ride
bicycles and any kind of water sport is good. I really appreciate working for
Salem Health. Here at the clinics and the hospital we have an incredible culture
where safety is really, really important. Everybody’s got everybody’s back. We all
work together as a team to provide the safest experience for our patients.
