Paola Susan, MD – Rush University Medical Center

I am a family physician who is deeply passionate
about the underserved populations — specifically the lesbian, gay, transgender, queer and bisexual
communities. The reason why I became so deeply involved
and passionate about these communities is because through my life, I have seen health
care disparities with these communities. I have seen patients that have not been taken
care of properly because of who they are or where they come from. It would have taken one person to speak up
and advocate for the patient for the outcome to have been better. I want to be that person that would advocate
for patients and will do everything possible to avoid a bad outcome. When any patient in the underserved community
or the LGBTQ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer] community come and see me, and they
are able to open up to me about their experiences, that is a win situation for me. One of the biggest victories I have had as
a family physician is being able to help teenagers coming out to their families, and be that
buffer between the family and the patient, and make sure that their relationship is still
intact.
