Nonprofit Opens New Mental Health Clinic For Struggling Veterans


FROM THE ATTACK SITE. THEY’RE RUNNING TESTS ON IT, CONFIDENT IT’S THE SAME ANIMAL. AS VETERANS CONTINUE TO WAIT FOR THE NEW VA HOSPITAL TO OPEN IN AURORA, THEY HAVE A NEW HOSPITAL TO SERVE THEIR MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS TONIGHT. KELLY WERTHMANN IS LIVE, AND THE STAFF IS EAGER TO HELP THE VETS AND THEIR FAMILIES. REPORTER: THAT’S RIGHT, AND AS THE DAUGHTER OF AN ARMY VETERAN, I CAN TELL YOU THE STRESS OF SERVICE IS OFTEN FELT BY MORE THAN JUST THE VETERAN, SO THIS CLINIC AIMS TO ALSO HELP FAMILY AND CARE GIVERS TOO. MILITARY SERVICE RUNS IN TIFFANY MORGAN’S BLOOD. EVERYONE ON MY DAD’S SIDE OF THE FAMILY WAS IN THE NAVY, ON MY MOM’S SIDE THEY WERE IN THE ARMY. REPORTER: SO SHE TOO ANSWERED THE CALL TO SERVE. AFTER TWO DEPLOYMENTS TO THE PERSIAN GULF, TIFFANY LEFT THE NAVY IN 2001. BUT SHE STILL HAS A PASSION TO SERVE. BECAUSE YOU’RE NO LONGER SERVING YOUR COUNTRY, THE WAY YOU CAN DO THAT IS BY SERVING OUR FELLOW VETERAN. REPORTER: TIFFANY IS NOW A CASE MANAGER AT THIS NEW FREE MENTAL HEALTH CLINIC FOR VETERANS. SHE’S HELPING COLORADO VETS WITH THEIR PTSD, ANXIETY OR ANY OTHER NEED, INCLUDING THE STIGMA OF ASKING FOR HELP. WHILE YOU WERE ACTIVE DUTY YOU WERE VIEWED AS THE WEAK LINK IF YOU ASKED FOR MENTAL HEALTH ASSISTANCE. REPORTER: UNLIKE THE VA, THIS CLINIC IS ALSO FOR VETERANS FAMILIES AND ANYONE THEY LEAN ON FOR SUPPORT. THEY CAN COME TO THE CLINIC THE SAME WEEK THEY CALL FOR TREATMENT. TIFFANY HOPES THE ACCESSIBILITY AND RELATABILITY OF PEOPLE THAT WORK HERE MAKES IT A PLACE THAT PEOPLE TURN TO FOR HELP. I’VE HAD ISSUES MYSELF AS A VETERAN. I’VE WORKED THROUGH THEM. I’M NOT EMBARRASSED BY THE MENTAL HEALTH ASPECT OF MY LIFE. YOU CAN HAVE THIS TOO.
