Mother of girl at Geneva youth center: ‘Conditions could be considered torture’

APOLOGIZING ON BEHALF OF THE
STATE OF NEBRASKA.>>BUT THEY ARE STILL HUMAN
BEINGS AND DO AT LEAST DESERVE
THEIR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS. MICHELLE: JENNIFER PRUE-SCOTT’S
15-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER IS ONE OF
THE TWO DOZEN GIRLS MOVED OUT OF
THE YOUTH TREATMENT CENTER I
GENEVA, THE STATE’S INSPECTOR
GENERAL FOR CHILD WELFARE CALLED THE CONDITIONS A CRISIS.>>THE CONDITIONS OF MY
DAUGHTER, AND WHAT THE OTHER
PEOPLE’S DAUGHTERS HAVE ENDURED
COULD BE CONSIDERED TORTURE. MICHELLE: STATE SENATOR SARA
HOWARD TOOK THESE PHOTOS INSIDE
THE FACILITY DURING A SURPRISE
VISIT LAST WEEK. ROOMS WITH NO MATTRESSES OR JUST
MATTRESSES ON A CEMENT FLOOR,
UNFINISHED TRENCH WORK, WET AND
MOLDY ROOMS, HOLES IN WALLS. HOWARD SAYS THE GIRLS FINALLY
HAD ENOUGH, STAGED A “UPRISING,”
— AN “UPRISING,” AND MANAGED TO
GET TO AN OFFICE PHONE TO CALL
FOR HELP.>>WHAT I’M CONCERNED ABOUT IT
— IS IT WAS THE GIRLS
THEMSELVES WHO CALLED THE CHILD
ABUSE AND NEGLECT HOTLINE. IT WAS THE GIRLS THEMSELVES WE
— THAT SAID WE SHOULDN’T BE
HERE AND THIS IS NOT SAFE. YOU’RE NOT TREATING US WELL. MICHELLE: DURING HER MEETING
WITH HOWARD, PRUE-SCOTT SAW
THOSE PICTURES FOR THE FIRST
TIME. ONE PHOTO SHOWS WHERE A GI
WROTE “FREE ME” ON THE WALL. HOWARD DIDN’T KNOW IT AT THE
TIME, BUT SHE MET PRUE-SCOTT’S
DAUGHTER HOWARD SAYS THE GIRL
WAS ALONE IN A ROOM WITHOUT
ELECRICITY SEVERAL TIMES.>>HER DAUGHTER WAS IN
CONFINEMENT IN A DARK ROOM. I SAID, WE ARE GOING TO TRY TO
FIGURE THIS OUT AND SHE SAID,
JUST GET ME OUT HERE. I’M SO SCARED, JUST GET ME OUT
OF HERE. MICHELLE: PRUE-SCOTT SAYS HER
DAUGHTER IS AUTISTIC, WITH
ADRENAL ISSUES AND A BEHAVIORAL
DISORDER. SHE SAYS THE GIRL WENT WITHOUT
HER MEDICATIONS FOR A MONTH. SHE HOPED HER DAUGHTER WOULD GET
HELP. IF ANY PARENT IN THE STATE OF
NEBRASKA WOULD TREAT THEIR OWN
CHILDREN LIKE THIS, THEY WOULD
HAVE THEIR CHILDREN TAKEN AWAY. MICHELLE: PRUE-SCOTT HAS A LONG
LIST OF STATE OFFICIALS SHE IS
MEETING WITH OVER THE NEXT
COUPLE OF DAYS. HER NEXT MEETING IS WITH HER
LAWYER. IN LINCOLN, MICHELLE BANDUR,
