My name is Matthew Ebell. I’m a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician at UnityPoint Health-Des Moines. I decided I wanted to go to the medical field as a child. I had numerous open heart surgeries starting at the age of four and had been in and out of the hospital most of my life. I looked to the providers that took care of me, and I saw that what a change they had made in my life and Kind of inspired me To want to go into that field as well, so I could help make changes in other people’s lives as well. I grew up in Northeast Ohio. From there, I went to undergraduate education at Miami University. I did my medical school in the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. I did my internship at UMDNJ and then did my residency at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. The thing I like about physical medicine rehab is it’s an interdisciplinary team approach. I work with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, the nursing staff, Recreational therapists. We all work as a unit to try and help each one of our patients achieve functionality again, whether that’s the stroke patient or a spinal cord injury patient or a traumatic brain injury patient. Our entire goal is getting them integrated back into the community and Working at the best level that they can. The thing that gives me the most satisfaction out of my job is seeing patients make gains and progress and getting back to Independent lifestyle. Some of my hobbies things I like to do in my free time are are camping, rafting, doing any kind of outdoor activity is something I really enjoy and look forward to, being out in nature and doing those types of things. What sets UnityPoint apart from other hospitals that I’ve worked at it has to be the staff that I work with. I enjoy coming in to work every day. We’re all on the same page and our goal is to give everyone a good experience.
