Meet Dr. Geoffrey Sklar – Urologic Oncologist

Hi my name is Dr. Geoffrey Sklar and I’m
the Associate Director of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Institute at
MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. As a urologic oncologist, my work focuses
on the diagnosis and treatment of kidney, bladder, prostate, and other urologic
cancers. Once we have a diagnosis of cancer, the most common questions are: “Am
I going to die from this?” Once we get beyond the “No, it’s not likely that
you’re going to die from this.” Then it’s sort of: “What procedures? What — what tests
do I need to do? What surgeries? How is this going to be dealt with?” And
then the other questions are basically: “How is this going to affect me long term,
my lifestyle? Am I going to be able to function?” And then: “Is this going to
impact my family? Is there a chance that any of them are going to end up with
this type of cancer as well?” Treatment for urologic cancers has really changed
over the last two decades. Earlier in my training, it was basically all surgical.
There was not a multi-modal approach, meaning we didn’t involve chemotherapy
or radiation therapy which are basically deep into the therapies right now. We
rely on all three of these type of therapies to treat the patient. It really
has changed. The other thing is technology has moved forward. Many of the
surgeries we do now are done either laparoscopically with small telescopes
or robotically to improve the care of the patient but lessen the hospital stay
and to quicken the recovery. When we discuss surgery, particularly robotic
surgery, with patients, we have to make sure that they understand that the
surgeon (meaning the person in front of them) is actually doing the surgery and
the robot’s a tool. And it’s a very good tool that that has capabilities that the
human hand does not have, but it’s still just a tool and the surgeon is the one
who’s going to be in charge of the tool and in charge of the patient. I believe
that MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center offers one of the most
comprehensive programs in the region for the diagnosis and treatment of urologic
cancers. Our patients have a full spectrum of care along with a team of
physicians whose entire focus is on curing cancer and restoring
quality of life. Cancer can be scary and life-changing, but we’re here to support
you every step of the way. My name is Dr. Geoffrey Sklar and I’m the
Associate Director of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Institute at
