Meet Dr. Betty Kim, Gastroenterologist with The Oregon Clinic

My name is Betty Kim and I’m a gastroenterologist at The Oregon Clinic Gastroenterology – East. I was born in Michigan and I did all of
my training at the University of Michigan including undergraduate,
medical school, residency, and fellowship. I see all patients for general
gastroenterology problems, but specifically I focus on two areas
including esophageal motility issues which are related to esophageal
swallowing problems, and inflammatory bowel disease which specifically relates to Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease. So when I was a second-year medical
student, I remember for the first time following a physician around in the
hospital, and I was assigned to a pediatric gastroenterologist who told me
about this first patient we were going to see who is the young boy who had some swallowing problems, and after describing to me his problems, we worked through what could
potentially be causing it. And after talking about that he brought me in to
to see my first endoscopy and that was really fascinating to me, that
this physician could work through this patient’s problems, and think about what
might be causing them, and actually find the problem and fix it. And I thought
that was really great and that was when I decided that’s what I wanted to do. While having been born and raised in Michigan, I fully expected to stay in Michigan, but when my husband and I were looking for jobs at the time Portland was actually the best fit for
us and it turned out to be a really great city and we’ve loved living here for
the last twelve years.
