Medicare & You: Nursing Home / Long-Term Care

♪ Hi, I’m Angela James at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. I’ve got some important information to share with you about Medicare & You. Did you know that 70% of people turning 65 will need some form of long-term care during their lives? Long-term care is a range of services and supports designed to meet your personal care needs. Most long-term care isn’t medical care, but rather assistance with the basic personal tasks of everyday life like bathing, dressing and eating. Most long-term care is provided at home. Other kinds of long-term care services and supports are provided by community service organizations and in long-term care facilities like a nursing home. Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover long-term care stays in a nursing home. If you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan, also called Part C (like an HMO or PPO), or if you have another kind of Medicare health plan, check with your plan to see if it covers nursing home care. Nursing homes vary in the quality of care and services they provide to their residents. If the nursing home has a contract with your health plan, ask the health plan if they check the home for quality of care. Learn more about the quality of nursing homes in your area by visiting Nursing Home Compare on Medicare.gov. Nursing Home Compare has detailed information about every Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing home in the country. Depending on your needs and resources, you may have other long-term care choices, like community services, home care, or assisted living. Before choosing a nursing home, you can check to see if one of these other options is available to you or if they might help after a nursing home stay. It’s helpful to plan ahead. It’s important to consider all your long-term care options, and make good financial plans early.
