Lymphedema Therapy at Memorial Hospital

*MUSIC* WELCOME TO MEMORIAL HEALTH & YOU. AFTER TREATMENT FOR BREAST CANCER SOME WOMEN DEVELOP A PAINFUL CONDITION CALLED LYMPHEDEMA. IT’S NOT POSSIBLE TO PREDICT WHO WILL GET LYMPHEDEMA, BUT TO HELP MANAGE IT SUCCESSFULLY IT’S IMPORTANT TO RECOGNIZE IT EARLY AND START TREATMENT PROMPTLY. PLEASE WELCOME MY GUEST TODAY DANIELLE RONQUILLE, AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST WITH MEMORIAL OUTPATIENT REHABILITATION. DANIELLE, WHAT IS LYMPHEDEMA AND HOW DOES IT DEVELOP? WELL, SUSAN, LYMPHEDEMA IS A BUILD-UP OF FLUID THAT CAUSES SWELLING IN THE ARMS AND LEGS. IT CAN DEVELOP WHEN THE LYMPHATIC VESSELS ARE MISSING OR IMPAIRED OR WHEN THE LYMPH NODES ARE REMOVED AS IN BREAST CANCER SURGERY. WHEN THE NODES ARE REMOVED THE LYMPH FLUID CANNOT ADEQUATELY DRAIN. THEREFORE, BREAST CANCER PATIENTS ARE AT RISK FOR DEVELOPING LYMPHEDEMA. HOW IS LYMPHEDEMA TREATED? AS A CERTIFIED LYMPHEDEMA THERAPIST I CAN OFFER SEVERAL EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS TO MANAGE LYMPHEDEMA EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NO CURE. THE TREATMENT INCLUDES MANUAL LYMPH DRAINAGE MASSAGE TECHNIQUES TO OPEN UP NEW PATHWAYS FOR THE FLUID TO DRAIN. DEEP BREATHING AND MOBILITY EXERCISES HELP WITH CIRCULATION. SPECIAL COMPRESSION BANDAGING AND COMPRESSION GARMENTS KEEP THE FLUID FROM COLLECTING IN THE AFFECTED AREA AGAIN. EVERY SIX MONTHS THESE GARMENTS LOOSE ELASTICITY AND NEED REPLACING. MY GOAL IS TO TEACH THE PATIENTS MASSAGING, METICULOUS SKIN AND NAIL CARE, EXERCISES AND BANDAGING TECHNIQUES SO THE SYMPTOMS OF LYMPHEDEMA CAN BE MANAGED SUCCESSFULLY LONG-TERM. I’M HAPPY TO SAY THAT ALMOST ALL MY PATIENTS ARE ABLE TO LEARN THESE TECHNIQUES AND FOLLOW THROUGH TO DECREASE THE SWELLING, DECREASE THE PAIN AND INCREASE MOBILITY. THANK YOU, DANIELLE. WE’D LIKE TO SEND YOU A FREE BROCHURE WITH SOME STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO HELP LOWER YOUR RISK FOR LYMPHEDMA AND EXPLAIN WHAT SIGNS TO LOOK FOR.
