I’m Jaime Rivera and I am a general bariatric
surgeon. I went to medical school at Harvard and trained at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
I was there for a year afterward with advanced surgery training and then came here to North
Shore. Surgery is of those things I was attracted
to out of medical school. I actually came to school thing I was going to be a pediatrician.
In medical school we go through these rotations, my surgical rotation was at the Mass General
Hospital. When I went there, honestly, it clicked. Surgery
was the thing that when you operate on people, you can solve problems very quickly.
You can take someone who has appendicitis and, by taking it out, it’s gone within an
hour. Bariatric surgery is very similar in a sense
that we do these procedures on people that give them the tools that quickly helps them
resolve their diabetes, quickly helps them lose weight, quickly helps them become happier,
more confident, better quality of life. It’s those things that are so attractive about
