Fatty Liver: How to Fix It (2019)

– Hey, Doctor Barry here. In this quick video I’m
going to talk to you about a topic that is so important, fatty liver and how to cure it? That’s right, cure it, get rid of it, you don’t have it anymore, okay. Fatty liver disease is a
huge epidemic in the US and the UK, Australia, Canada. You’re gonna wind up losing
a loved one you cherish to fatty liver if we don’t
start turning the tide on this epidemic. Before I get started
please take one second, click the subscribe button, that way every time I have a bright idea you’ll be one of the
very first to know, okay. Now, fatty liver disease, this is a huge epidemic that you may not have heard of at all. Maybe you have but if
you haven’t you need to and so do your friends and neighbors. Fatty liver, also called non-alcoholic
fatty liver disease, or if your liver’s inflamed we sometimes as doctors call it non-alcoholic
steatohepatitis, okay. All these things mean
basically the same thing, that your body has
inappropriately stored fat in your liver. Not a good thing, huge risk factor for liver failure, for death, for heart disease. We’ll get into all that
in just a few minutes. Let me give you a few facts about fatty liver disease
and how common it is? You’re gonna be blown away by this, okay. And then at the end of this
video I’m gonna tell you how to cure fatty liver in either yourself or a loved one, okay. First of all, 30 to 40% of adults in the US and in most Western
Society have fatty liver, three to four out of 10, right. That’s nuts. That’s ridiculous, okay. And fatty liver’s self-inflicted and I’m gonna tell you how to cure it. But three out of four
out of 10 people you know have fatty liver disease as an adult. What about kids? Of course kids don’t have this, right? No, you’re wrong. One out of every 10 kids in America, down to as young as three years old, depending on how terrible their diet is, can have fatty liver disease, yeah. There are actually teenagers on the liver transplant list now because of their fatty liver disease. I mean, all doctors in
America should literally hang their head in shame
that this is occuring because it’s entirely, 100% preventable and 100% curable if you eat the right diet and do the things that I talk about later in this video. Of type two diabetics, if you’re a type two
diabetic you have a 40 to 80% chance of having
fatty liver disease, okay. So if you’re a type two diabetic, if you’re overweight, if you have insulin resistance you’re almost guaranteed to have fatty liver disease, so you really need to do what I’m about to talk about, okay. So why do we care? Well, because it is now the leading cause of liver failure and people being on the liver transplant list. It’s even more dangerous than alcoholism, than overdosing on Tylenol, than having hepatitis, that’s how bad fatty liver disease is. So you really need to do these things I’m about to talk about
’cause I wanna teach you how to fix your fatty liver. I wanna teach you how to help your mom fix her fatty liver or your uncle or your
friend across the road. Because if they have fatty
liver it’s quite possible that their doctor hasn’t
even made a big deal about it, okay, but it is a huge deal. So how do you fix fatty liver? You know me, I talk about the practical. I talk about the common sense. I talk about what you can do today to begin to fix things? And that’s what I’m gonna
talk about in this video. First I wanna tell you
about the most likely things that are gonna fix this
and then we’ll talk about a few other things
that might help a little bit but I want you to always focus on the 80%. Don’t focus on the 20%, right, focus on the big picture, what’s really gonna have the most effect for the least amount of effort, and that’s what I’m gonna talk about first ’cause that’s the most important. Now, if you have someone
who has fatty liver or who is overweight or type two diabetic that you know, please share this video with them ’cause it could literally
change their life and literally save their life, right. Here we go. In Western Society, in America any time we wanna fix a problem what do we do? We wanna buy something, we wanna go get something, we wanna basically add something to the system, right? And for fatty liver like
many of the diseases, the chronic diseases
that we all suffer from, it’s not a question of what you add to the disease it’s a question of what do you subtract? What do you take out of your system? What do you stop putting in your system? And fatty liver disease falls perfectly in this category. If you want to cure your
fatty liver disease you have to stop fructose. You have to stop sugars. You have to stop starches. You have to stop simple carbs, that’s it. That is the cure. I’m not joking, you can literally turn
off the video right now and go and make those changes in your life and cure your fatty liver, okay. Now, I’m gonna get into a few more details so you might wanna stay tuned but it’s up to you because that’s he 80%. Literally fructose, sugars, starches, simple carbs, that’s it, stop those. Those are poisoning your body. They are making your
biochemical digestive system inappropriately lay down fat in your liver and also lay down fat in your pancreas. Fatty pancreas is also a very bad thing. I’ve got another video
back on my channel here about fatty pancreas if
you wanna check that out. But fatty liver as we talked about is a huge medical risk, so you gotta fix this. Okay, so fructose, whether it comes from a soft drink in the from of high fructose corn syrip or whether it comes from a delicious, ripe organic peach is digested
completely differently in your body from other
sugars and starches, okay. And it’s highly likely
it’s going to be laid down as fat in your liver. So you’ve gotta get the fructose out of your life completely, but don’t just think it’s fructose and nothing else, okay. Because you know sugar, sugar’s made up of glucose
and fructose, right. So if anything is presweetened, that’s gonna make your fatty liver worse or it’s gonna increase your risk of developing fatty liver disease, okay. All the starches, all the simple sugars, as soon as you eat them
and your acid breaks them up and digests them they
turn into some combination of glucose and fructose, that’s right, exactly right. Even the carbs in broccoli break down ultimately into glucose and fructose but they’re so locked up in the fiber and they’re so blended with great vitamins, minerals and nutrients
that I think it’s okay to get those carbs in
cruciferous vegetables, in leafy greens, I think those carbs are acceptable because they’re so locked up in the fiber if you eat them raw or lightly steamed and they’re so filled with nutrition, I think they’re okay. But the starches from any grain, any grain whatsoever is going to make your fatty liver worse. You gotta stop the grains. You gotta stop anything
that has fructose in it and you gotta stop the sugars, the starches, that’s it. That’s the solution, that’s the cure. We could literally wipe out the epidemic of fatty liver disease by
just following those things. One more thing you’ve
gotta get out of your life because it inflames your liver
which can cause your liver to jay down more fat than
it might would otherwise, is the vegetable oil. And I do this because there’s no
vegetables in them, right. Canola, safflower, soybean oil, all those gotta go, okay. They inflame your liver and that’s gonna make
your liver lay down fat which you do not want. You gotta cook your foods in real fats like bacon grease, lard, avocado oil, olive oil, butter, right. Those are the things you cook in. If you’ve got canola oil
in your kitchen right now pause this video, push the pause button. Get up and go to the kitchen right now and throw that crap in the garbage ’cause that’s where it belongs, okay. Now, other things that you can do that might help with fatty liver and these are the 20%, so don’t focus on these. These are just little extras so that after you’re already doing the 80% you can also do these for maybe a little added benefit. One is vitamin D, vitamin D has been associated, low vitamin D is associated with worse fatty liver disease. Now, that does not mean
that low vitamin D causes it but it might help it a little bit. So make sure you’re taking a good quality vitamin
D supplement every day, that might help a little bit. Taking Glucofage, which is
a prescription medication has been shown in a couple of studies to be associated with
improving fatty liver. It does not mean that
it improves fatty liver but it definitely doesn’t hurt so you might consider if your doctor has you on Glucophage or Metformin continuing to take that. Omega 3 fatty acids look like they probably help fatty
liver a little bit. That does not mean go buy a supplement. What I would prefer you do is just eat more grass fed meats that have omega 3s, more pastured eggs that
have omega 3 in the yolk, more butter that’s grass fed butter and get more omega 3s, that’s probably going
to help the fatty liver. What else, now I’ll tell you some no’s, absolutely don’t do this
for your fatty liver. If any guru or health expert says, hey, I’ve got this liver cleanse, I’ve got this liver supplement, no, that is a waste of money. You don’t need that, okay. All you need to do is focus on the 80% I talked about earlier. Do not buy pills, powders, supplements, none of that stuff is gonna
help your liver, okay. You don’t need to add
anything to this equation, you just need to subtract the poison, get it out, okay. If your doctor says, hey, take Statin drug, that’ll get the fat out of your liver, no, there is no research
that shows that at all. That’s dumb, don’t do that, okay. Your doctor may instead
of using Glucophage or Metformin, he may say, hey, you should take Actos or Avandia ’cause there’s some research
that shows they help with fatty liver, no. If you look at the research, it’s dumb. Don’t do that. Don’t take Avandia and Actos. Those are not good type two
diabetes medications, okay. You wanna focus on
Matformin or Glucophage. Matformin and Glucophage
has this false reputation of being hard on your
kidneys but that’s dumb. What’s really hard on your kidneys is when your blood sugar’s high and when you’re insulin level’s high. That’s what destroys your kidneys. So if your doctor says, hey, take some Glucophage, it might help, yeah, it’s probably a good thing to do but don’t think that that’s the solution. The solution is to fix your diet, okay. Two of the ways you don’t
wanna fix fatty liver unless they’re just a last stitch effort, one is bariatric surgery, stomach stapling, the donut procedure, any of those bariatric surgery options. Fix your fatty liver with your diet, don’t fix it with surgery, okay. It works, no doubt, but my God, what a sacrifice, what a compromise to have permanent, unchangeable surgery to
your gastrointestinal system rather than just fix your diet. I don’t get the logic in that. And the last way to fix fatty liver is with a liver transplant and if you don’t fix your diet one day that’ll become your only option. You’ll have no option but to fix it by being on the liver transplant list and waiting for someone to die so you can have their liver. I really don’t recommend that as a way to do this at all, okay. Focus on the 80%. If you wanna add the 20%, if you have the money
and the means to do that, that’s okay, but that’s not the solution. The solution is to fix your diet in just the ways I told you above. And then you will have zero chance of ever developing fatty liver disease unless you’re a drinker or you overdose on medications or you have hepatitis, otherwise you’ll never
get fatty liver disease if you fix your diet. Now, if you enjoyed this

  1. I am a 26 yo female.. i am 5 ft 4 inches.. have always been 120-125 in weight.
about 2 years ago i got extremely depressed and lazy.. ate fast food twice a day everyday.. ate hot fries nearly everyday.. i started noticing this fullness near my spleen and would get this VERY uncomfortable feeling when I ate. i constantly had to have pressure against my abdomen to "appease" the pain, which really didn't work.. after noticing my weight gain(20 pounds) I Scheduled an appoint with my doc and after several tests and appointments with specialists i was diagnosed with fatty liver.
I know for me, I never realized how delicate my body really is. we only see the outside of our body.. not whats inside so its easy to forget or overlook certain things.. watch what you put into yourself. worry more about what your insides look like rather than the outside.. and that in turn will even adjust how you look on the outside.
Don't eat fast food, and if you do make it occasional.
Fatty liver has completely killed my confidence and my energy. Don't allow yourself to get to the worst point before making a change… yeah.. i get it. i'm not obese, but it still affects me mentally.
I'm not confident and i hate how i look and feel.
i had always been health conscious and worked out, but its been a lot more difficult for me to get that started again
I wish i realized my mortality a lot sooner

  2. thank u buddy! got dam saved my life.. and i know better. man i saw this video twice. did not stop eating sugar!
and noodles dam instant udon was killin me.

  3. How Long would it take my fatty liver to recover from now on? I have started with Keto and Int.fasting 3 weeks ago and lost already 4 kg and some lipedemia fat (yes, that fat which doesn't respond to diet or sports, they still claim) and loads of liquid in my legs. And I am not hungry. 🙂     Very helpful, short clear and honest. Thank you

  4. If only people knew the story behind ´´canola oil“, they would immediately throw it in the bin, just like you daid. Awesome video.

  5. Think you just prescribed a very low carb, ketogenic diet, to half of the western population. I can't help wondering, how such amount of this type of food (beef and butter etc) ever could be produced?

  6. i’m 14 and i’m diagnosed with fatty liver disease thank you for this advice my parents recommend me being vegan and i will drink more water and vegetables

  9. I watched this video over and over many times and I think it will be the solution to my problem of fatty liver. Taking out the bad things from your diet will be the solution. I will give it a 100% try. But DR can I eat eggs for breakfast or are they also culprits?

  10. 3 year olds! That's absolutely shocking.. Thank you for the info. I'm binge watching them.. Probably the only healthy type of binge 🙂 x

  11. But what about fruits? 🤨 you would think that natural fruit sugars are okay and actually very beneficial to the body.

  12. your tags say Keto but you didnt exactly tell us to do keto . is keto the answer? lots of other dr's say to juice and eat fruits … all this shiat is soooo effing confusing. Im sick of being lethargic ughhhh

  13. Great video! Now if you could list a couple of resources or something of that nature to where I could find a recipe book with recipes to help cure fatty liver disease that would be helpful!!!

  14. I have fatty liver and I recently got pregnant … I have been able to lower my liver enzymes before I was pregnant but they are still high. Can i bring them down during pregnancy? I have been on a no fat diet for about a month but I dont know if that's enough…. any suggestions or anyone on here been pregnant and lowered their enzymes? It would be great to hear from others

  15. I found a program consisting of a completely natural way to treat fatty liver from the comfort of one's home. do you want to know?

  16. Hello doctor berry I had my gallbladder removed few months ago and doctor said I got fatty liver and I never smoke or drink alcohol and no diabetic can you please advise me more about it since I can’t eat fat

  17. This shit is rampant down south in pretty much every southern state where high carb food is a staple in every grandma's kitchen. It's a matter of not being educated about diets and how they affect them. I have people in my family that try and tell me that the keto diet is just a load of shit. I think, really ? Eating actual food a load of shit, but eating carbs and fried chicken and fried fish mixed with potatoes and a slice elf chocolate create cake afterward isn't a load of shit ? Bullshit. I think so people have a hard time accepting a keto diet and that it's how our ancestors ate because they don't want to accept that the earth is older than what their bible story tells them and so they don't believe in evolution and all it entails, our diets , our genes. My own dad doesn't believe dinosaurs were real and that we are related to apes and he will not listen to anything I say. So to a degree I do believe that religious beliefs has to do with accepting a diet , because you can't stay a creationist and do the keto diet and not accept the facts that we are older than the bible story says. Because a creationist can't agree with the phrase well we've been eating this way for 100,000 years, because they aren't allowed to believe that. They aren't a looked to believe that "Lucy", the himan/ape ancestor is real , and that's how religion gets in the way of eating a natural diet. I didn't mean to make this about religion but it has to be said and I don't apologize for it.

  18. Literally fructose, sugars,
starches, simple carbs, that's it, stop those. One more thing you've gotta get out of your life is the vegetable oil.
If you've got canola oil in your kitchen right now

    pause this video,

    push the pause button.

Get up and go to the kitchen right now

and throw that crap in the garbage

'cause that's where it belongs, okay. 🙂 i just love that part

  19. The effects of glyphosate poisoning and how best to flush glyphosate from the body would have been appreciated.

  20. Doc, tell to the people and doctors pl. And again….. Is a good terapeutic diet, the carnivore diet with watherfast. not only for sibo, its good for gallbladder sludge to, to prevent the gallstones. And for fatty liver! 3 days waterfast cleans the bile sludge. This is another huge misunderstanding by today's doctors, the bile sludge. The Bile sludge is a much more complex problem. Bile sludge is a disease of the fatty liver and the injured gallbladder wall complex. Bacterias fungus adhere to the damaged gallbladder wall because the bile is not sufficient quality and quantity. If the patient eat any sugar , carbs, or soluble fiber, the gallbladder gas because of the microbes in the gallbladder wall, inflates the gallbladder, leading to further damage to the gallbladder wall.

The only cure for gallbladder sludge is , a carnivorous diet with the sometimes 2-3 days waterfast, and the daily jogging, nothing else! Thanks for watching.

  21. 1k unlikes must be from the doctors. Dr, Berry please help my brother he's suffering from fatty liver disease from the last month's & it's almost 2 months ago now. We change the treatment twice from different doctors but it don't help him yet. Now he's totally can't even move his body now. Like mention in the comment " zombie like" 😢😢😢😢😢 he lost his energy with no more foods. He don't waNt to eat food now. He can't even move now

  22. I'm actually here because a statin has raised liver enzymes and bilirubin levels. Levels are slowly returning to normal but not yet. Time for a different lifestyle and see what happens.

  23. John's Hopkins says there's no actual cure for this… Mayo Clinic is in agreement… How can this change when the medication that brought it about is still required because of 3 spinal diseases, Stenosis, Spondelothesis, Degenerative Disc and massive migraines to top it off. 18 surgeries… I don't drink or do illicit drugs, was an athlete…mom of 4, business exec, community service, church volunteer… Have lost everything, please don't say you have the answer …

  24. Have gallbladder disease haven’t removed it yet and was told on the ultrasound that I have a fatty liver so should I include real butter instead of the oils

  25. Thank you so much. I was just diagnosed with NAFLD and I know that my weight and my love for Pepsi is the problem. No one was able to tell me that soda and my weight was the cause. The only thing they keep saying is you gotta loose the weight. That's good and all but I'm going to have to go cold turkey. Water fast for 10 days and then go into juicing.

  26. Hi doctor. Thank you so much for this informative video. I'm 38 years old male suffering from type 2 diabetes and Nash. I have heard good things about Milk thistle. Will taking milk thistle supplement help fatty liver?

  27. Can fatty liver cause an enlarged spleen?
I had a ct scan and have fatty liver and enlarged spleen. They did not find a reason for the enlarged spleen.
I'm over weight, i had bloodwork done and everything was fine.

  28. I absolutely love your channel and your effort. I think that it really changes people's lives for good, at least mine have been improved greatly thanks to you, so thanks! But when you say – "tell your loved ones, so they can get better" I wish that it was as easy. My dad had a bypass surgery a few years ago, and for some weird reason he just doesn't want to hear anything about cutting the carbs. On the contrary, he tells that the doctors told him to cut on the fat , and eat more carbs. I had several fights with him trying to convince him with facts – nothing helps. When I give him facts about how sugar is bad for him – he just doesn't want to listen. Also he always asks me to order an "essentialle forte" which he considers as a magic cure for his liver. It's very frustrating, because I know he's just hurting himself with his diet and I can't help. I just wonder – why do people are sometimes so stubborn, even when they have all the evidence before them?

  29. I'm an alcoholic. But I don't have fatty liver whenever I have an MRI or Ultrasound scan. I also don't have fibrosis from fibro scan. My question is why do I not have fatty liver disease? My answer is I do not eat any processed foods. No sugars almost zero carbohydrates but lots and lots of mono and saturated fats. Yes that's correct I eat a lot of meat. At 60 years of age my recent colonoscopy revealed perfect bowels. So what gives? I drink 2 bottles of wine every night for the past 12 years. My blood triglycerides are extremely low. I do not exercise whatsoever. My cholesterol is perfect. My full blood count's and my liver function tests come back normal. I am not diabetic. So how can this be? My theory? I eat like a Neanderthal. Vegetables nuts and lots and lots of meat and saturated fat. I haven't brushed my teeth for 20 years yet I have no gum disease no tooth decay nor Plaque. My dentist was amazed. I have not eaten breakfast cereal for over 45 years. Every breakfast for me is eggs bacon sausages. Lunch is steak with vegetables. Dinner time is roast chicken with vegetables. I have been a regular moderate to heavy drinker for 30 years. Never any spirits nor any beer only dry wines. I am overweight as well. I am 5 foot 10 and weigh 100 kg. I am not a bodybuilder. 30 years ago I was 70 kg. Every year for the past 30 years I have gained 1 kg per year. So I consume 1,270 cal per day extra purely in alcohol. Or 8,890 cal per week. Or 35,560 cal per month. Or 426,720 cal per year. As 3,500 cal equals half a kilo in fat I should be gaining 121 kg per year. Yet I only gain 1 kg per year for the past 30 years. Where is the extra 120 kg per annum going? Am I a freak? My BP is usually 120/75 pulse is 65. One thing I will admit that I am very sluggish. I consume almost 0 carbs and zero sugar. Maybe that would explain my lethargy. However I'm still very strong I can lift very heavy things. Thanks for a fantastic Channel I have subscribed.

  30. 8:13 Get up right now and throw that crap in the garbage! I love this. A medical doctor who knows the truth. What an incredibly rare species. And so sad it's going to take another 20 or 30 years until the truth is known by all doctors. Shame shame shame on heart foundation's the world over. Where does most of the funding come from? The grain growers lobby. High carb low-fat my arse. High saturated and mono fat and low carb Is the truth. Subscribed.

  31. When I was first told that I have fatty liver, the doctor said as she was walking into the room and said “but we will deal with that later “ . When I asked her about it later, she brushed it aside with “more important “ matters. It seemed like she wasn’t concerned about it at all so I figured it wasn’t much of a concern. Over 10 years went by and my friend told me a family member of hers just died bc she had fatty liver disorder. I was floored. You can die and my doctor was so flippant about it? I have asked 3 other doctors and they all said things like there’s no diet for it, no particular foods to eat or avoid. They all quickly changed the subject. You are the first one to really explain the disease and explain what to do about it.

  32. This is enlightenment for me to hear you say that fatty liver can be reversed from this vital organ. My husband has lost 22lbs. on a balanced ketone diet. The greens like kale are so enjoyed as we eat meat. Grateful for your edu 4 us all.

  33. Long time ago my doctor told me I had a fatty liver and as you said he didn’t make it a big deal for me, but I thank God and I thank you and so many doctors who taught me Keto is a key to live longer. Thank you 🙏

  34. Thankyou so much Dr.! I greatly appreciate the way you went straight for the proper steps to take early in your video. You didn't make me wait for an hour to share with me what exactly I could do right now to start changing my condition.

  35. Thank you doctor for your video, I just started a ketogenic lifestyle, however I had my gallbladder removed and I am concerned on the effect of this diet without it. do you have a video that talks about this lifestyle without a gallbladder? I have learned so much from your videos thank you!!

  36. I have not yet been diagnosed with fatty liver, but recently had an ultrasound that showed a slightly fatty liver and borderline enlarged liver, according to the report. I had the test because of abdominal pain. My PCP basically just told me to get bloodwork, saw my TSH was high, and is sending me for more bloodwork. She didn't AT ALL explain that this could mean fatty liver disease and that an immediate change to my diet could help me a lot. Luckily I am a paranoid person and decided to research everything in the ultrasound report myself. Thank you for this video, I am cutting out soda forever starting right now. I am praying that my dietary changes will turn things around and I never reach the fibrosis or cirhossis stage, and hopefully I can find a better PCP who won't simply say "of you still have pain you can go see a gastroenterologist" and not explain anything. I'm praying that the abdominal pain doesn't mean it is worse than NAFLD.

  37. My supplement is b12 b complex magnesium
    I have hep c since 17 plz
Working on cleaning my liver through clean eating

  38. Sir, do you have any info on benefits or harm that Stevia causes or might cause to the liver? The reason I ask is that I found a product recently (Iconic Protein Drink) that provides 20g of non-whey protein, caffeine shot of = 2 cups of coffee, 8 carbs (incl 3 sugar), and is sweetened by an unstated amount of Stevia Leaf Extract (Rebudioside A) and Monk Fruit. Seems to good to be true (getting 30g of protein (2/3 in morning [drinking full 11.5 oz bottle, 1/3 at lunch [by drinking 1/2 11.5 oz bottle), plus the caffeine…all with 12 carbs (about 5g sugar) and about 200 calories. Any wisdome on this confusing topic would be appreciated. Thx.
