My experience with drugs… has lasted over 25 years. I even sold my kidney to a private buyer. I punctured my skin with scissors, to sign my name in blood. All while my mother was watching. “25 Years an Addict”
One Addict’s Experience with Drugs Videomug met up with a man who’s recovering from 25 years of drug abuse. Hello!
Hello. Nice to meet you. We’re from SBS. Let’s move over there.
Ok. Some think that all addicts use drugs because they’re seeking some sort of hedonistic pleasure. But it’s actually very scary. How do you think the friend who provided you with drugs first got into it? How do people first start smoking cigarettes?
Caption: Not a drug addict……. …but a drug addiction specialist! I am currently the head of National Anti-Drug Action Addiction Rehabilitation Headquarters Caption: Park Youngduk, 16 years of experience in this drug rehabilitation department
In total, I’ve been in this industry for over 25 years. Actually with my experience consulting, rehabilitating, and helping these people return back to society, my total experience in this field is closer to 40 years. Q: Do you remember the first time you started to use drugs? I do. Hm.. when I was in middle school, well into puberty, I started sniffing glue. I entered society not knowing how to do much of anything. I think I started just because it was pleasurable. There was this member of a Phillippino band, who to this day I still remember his name, His name was Leatherby. He gave me a bottle this small. And once I looked around, I saw all my friends were already doing drugs like that. Q: Doing drugs for that long, you must have faced problems living your life normally. I started developing mental issues, Because of the drug abuse, I’ve battled diabetes for over 26 years. I was stick skinny and could not judge my situation accurately. Sometimes, I would stay in my room with all the curtains drawn. My mother would come in and see my shaking in fear. Because of this, I was admitted into a mental hospital for the first time.
Caption: Admitted 11 times total My poor mother witnessed all of this. I promised her, even writing a blood oath, that I would quit. I couldn’t even keep my promise for 3 days. Later on, to buy drugs, I even met with a private buyer to sell my kidney. One day, my parents received a call from the hospital. “Is your son Park Youngduk?” “He attempted suicide, and is in a near-death situation.” My mother didn’t even come to the hospital. She thought, if he was going to die, he would’ve been dead already. “That was the decision you choose.” “I have already seen your death, from your actions in the past.” Even now, when I talk about these things, I get teared up. It was the 11th time that I was admitted to the mental hospital. Without my family or anyone else with me, just myself. I didn’t have 10 cents to my name. For the first time, I went to the doctor. ” I confessed to him that I’m a drug addict. And also, …that I wanted to live.” “I don’t want to die.” For a lot of reasons, I’m really scared now.” 16 years have now passed not as a drug addict but a rehab consultant Q: From your experience, are drugs really commonplace? A lot of people refer to it as their ‘life drug’. These people do drugs almost every day. Similarly to how we would wake up and eat breakfast, These people shoot drugs. Not a lot, but enough to function for just that day. However, that is just their own estimation. In the end, their brains develop abnormalities. Cautiously,
He shares his story on punishment. Q: What do you think about the argument “Drug laws are too lax, and are therefore ineffective to deter this crime?” I spoke with Rapper Vasco yesterday Vasco: “If you imprison an addict in the hopes of him getting better, “then the crime should decrease, right?” ‘We need to lock up these XX drug addicts and kill them, we need to lock them up for life, we have to implement harder sentences’ I’m personally really against this. It will never work.” What Vasco is saying is that criminalizing drugs is fine and all, but but we also have to have rehabilitation measures in place for people to get better before we imprison them. The people that we need to punish the harshest, for example, are those that are participating in bringing drugs into this country. Or those that sell drugs. It’s only human that we make mistakes in our lives. There are several different types of mistakes. But especially in the case of making a mistake in doing drugs, there’s just no way to recover from this mistake. No opportunity to recover. And because of that, the family members that have never done drugs, the family just falls apart. In the Korean government, this organization is the only advocate for rehabilitation This is the only place people can go to to consult their addiction problems. I know several people that have several counts of drug felonies charged against them. But, it really makes no difference to them. They’ll get treated and actually quit drugs. For a regular person, quitting and just getting by is very difficult. However, as a member of society, this is an extremely important step. National Anti-Drug & Rehabilitation Center
