Christine Maclean, NP – Rush University Medical Center

“Patients come in for everything from asthma,
allergies, immunology problems, skin problems, eczema, hives. There’s an old adage that you should listen
to your patient because they’re giving you the diagnosis, and I think that’s true. But if you listen hard enough, they’re also
giving you part of the solution, part of the treatment plan. And if you don’t listen to them, you’re
just gonna do what you think is best, and they may or may not follow through on it because
it doesn’t suit their lifestyle. When my patients come in and tell me they
have pets, and they’re allergic to pets, I know they’re not necessarily gonna get
rid of the pets — they’re family members. So I have to find a way to make it work, so
that they get well, or their kids get well. In our specialty, this is people seeking to
improve their quality of life. And we can do that, and that’s kind of a
nice feeling.”
