BayCare Clinic Minute: Importance of hearing tests before dementia tests

Hi. Welcome to the BayCare Clinic Minute. Today, we’re talking about the importance of testing hearing before testing for
dementia. Dr. Grezca. Oftentimes undiagnosed and untreated hearing loss
will come across as a memory problem. If a patient did not hear something that
was told to them accurately the first time, when they’re asked to recall that
information later on and they’re not able to, oftentimes family and
friends will consider that something that they did not remember, rather than
it actually being unheard the first time through. These concerns from family and
friends will sometimes lead to the recommendation of testing for these
memory issues and if the testing is also completed, without being accurately
diagnosed and treated from a hearing standpoint, that hearing loss may also
have a negative impact on the test results itself. So, a lot of times hearing
loss will negatively impact the appearance of a memory issue. Ok great,
thank you. That’s our time, we’ll see you again soon.
