Andrew Tinsley, M.D., Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center – Penn State Hershey Medical Center

>>[Music] My name is Andrew Tinsley. I’m
a gastroenterologist at Penn State Hersey Medical Center and I specialize in taking
care of patients with Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease, what we call Inflammatory
Bowel Disease or IBD. So I’ve been doing this for quite a long time and now my practice
is really only Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. I’ve honestly believed given how
complex these diseases are and how the medical information regarding these diseases changes
almost daily, that now we have new medications, new ways to treat, in order for me to really
do the best I can for my patients, I think it’s very important that I’m focused really
on those two diseases. I’m actually very passionate about IBD because I have a family member who
has Ulcerative Colitis. I’ve seen that family member go to doctor’s offices, I’ve visited
that person in the hospital and I’ve started to understand a little bit, or as best I can
from a patient perspective, what it’s like to have IBD, and it’s helped shaped my practice
because I’ve seen a lot of things along the way that I feel could be done better. One
of the things I noticed about IBD, from a patient standpoint, is that everybody is different.
It’s not a one size fits all approach. It’s very important that people understand that
this is a disease not just of the intestines, that it’s a disease that can affect any part
of the body. IBD patients can have issues with their eyes, they can issues with their
joints, they can have skin problems. They can also have other symptoms such as debilitating
fatigue and so it’s very important that a patient gets to see a provider who recognizes
that, understands that that’s related to their inflammatory bowel disease and either treats
that issue or sends them as quickly as possible to an expert in that area that can address
it. What was unique about this place and what drew me here, is that we have this new IBD
center, which is more than just a name. It really is an amazing thing that Dr. Colten
and others have been able to put together, which is very, very exciting. We have created
an Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center. A place where patients can come and be seen in a very
short time frame by real experts, people who’ve done extra training, specialize in Ulcerative
Colitis and Crohn’s Disease, people who day in and day out only see people with Ulcerative
Colitis and Crohn’s Disease or operate on patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
And what we’ve done it put all those experts in one place and we’ve really put together
an amazing team that is looking to help patients in central Pennsylvania and beyond to provide
world class care, to provide an improved quality of life for patients with IBD. We’re looking
around the country, and around the world actually, to sort of figure out how to take care of
patients with Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis in a different type of way because it is such
a complicated disease that really does need a whole team of people and we have that team
at Penn State. [Music]
